Craig David and US Pigmentation Problems

Posted in mixed celebs on June 28, 2010 by jerlina

I went to find a music video by Craig David, a pop star from the UK and found two versions of “Walkin Away.” I was watching the US version and thought “wow, he looks really dark compared to how I’ve seen him in other videos.” Sure enough, I found the UK version and he is significantly lighter. My hunch is that in the US he is a black artist and in the UK he is a mixed artist so here he needs to be darker than there. Who knows, it’s just really weird to add or subtract pigment to people, so so weird. Here are the two versions:

Oh, and this is a little bit about David’s fam:

David was born in Holyrood, Southampton, Hampshire, the son of Tina (née Loftus), a shop assistant at Superdrug, and George David, a carpenter.[3][4] David’s father is a Grenadian and David’s mother is a British Jew related to the founders of the Accurist watch-making company; David’s maternal grandfather was an Orthodox Jew and his maternal grandmother a convert to Judaism. David’s parents separated when he was eight and he was raised by his mother. He attended Bellemoor School.

David’s father played bass in a reggae band called Ebony Rockers. As a teen, David began accompanying his father to local dance clubs, where DJs let him take the microphone.

I found this list of mixed films on the InterMix website. They are a group out of the UK which seems to focus on half black/ half white people like me. I’m ok with that =)

Young Tiger

I was looking for the Oprah interview when Tiger announced his identity as “Cablanasian” but couldn’t find it. I did find this interview from 1998 which depicts a young, fresh, innocent Tiger. It does make me sad how much flack Tiger got from identifying the way that he does but I guess people will give you a hard time no matter what you do. If you are yourself people are mean. If you act like someone else people are mean. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Obama at His Best

This is still my favorite Obama speech. As I’m sure you all remember it is in this speech that he discusses the complexities of his family and his vision for a more perfect America where people from different backgrounds manage to get along.

Kelis’ Milkshake

Posted in mixed celebs on June 25, 2010 by jerlina

I really do love music videos. This one is “milkshake” by Kelis which was popular when I was in college. Here’s what wikipedia has to say about where this lady came from:

Kelis was born and raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, New York. Her first name is a portmanteau of her father’s name, Kenneth, and her mother’s name, Eveliss. Kenneth is an African American jazz musician, Pentecostal minister, and was a professor at Wesleyan University. Eveliss is a Chinese-Puerto Rican fashion designer who inspired Kelis to pursue her singing career.
